Change the key of a song

This song key changer moves a song one key step per semitone. Go up 2 to turn C major into D major, or down 3 to take E minor to C sharp minor. Tempo and length stay put.

  • Shift from -12 to +12 semitones
  • Plus or minus 12 is a full octave
  • Tempo and running time stay the same

BPM changer, key unchanged

Slow a tricky passage to 0.75x to learn it, or push a workout mix to 1.25x. The key stays put, so a 120 BPM song at 0.75x plays at 90 BPM in its original key.

  • Tempo from 0.5x to 2x
  • The song stays in its original key

USE CASES

Ways to use a song pitch changer

Singers, players, teachers and video makers reach for pitch and tempo control for different reasons.

Sing in your own range

Lower a backing track two or three semitones so the chorus sits where your voice is strongest, or raise it when a song feels too low to project.

Practice at a slower tempo

Slow a fast solo or vocal run to 0.7x, learn it note by note, then raise the tempo a little each session until you can play it at full speed.

Play along in tune

Many rock songs are recorded with guitars tuned down a half step. Shift the track up 1 semitone and play along in standard tuning.

Voice pitch effects

Raise a voiceover a few semitones for a lighter cartoon tone, or lower it for a deeper narrator, then drop the WAV into your video editor.

Workout and DJ mixes

Nudge a track's BPM closer to the next song in a set, or speed up a running playlist, while every song keeps its original key.

Choirs and classrooms

Teachers can move a song into a key that young voices reach comfortably, or slow it down so a class can learn the melody line by line.

COMPARE

Pitch shifting vs speed change vs a DAW

Changing playback speed moves pitch and tempo together. A pitch shifter separates them. A DAW adds control and setup.

TIPS

6 tips to change the pitch of a song

A pitch shifter sounds best with modest shifts and a clean source. Keep these in mind before you download.

  1. 01

    Find the key first

Run the song through the key finder so you know where you start, then count the semitones to the key you want.

  2. 02

Keep shifts near 5 or less

Up to about 5 semitones either way usually sounds natural. Beyond that, voices turn thin or boomy and artifacts get easy to hear.

  3. 03

    Take the shorter way round

Up 7 semitones and down 5 land in the same key, an octave apart. When either register works, pick the smaller move.

  4. 04

    Do the BPM math

For a target tempo, divide it by the original BPM: 90 from a 120 BPM song is 0.75x. The BPM finder gives you the starting number.

  5. 05

    Start from a clean file

A WAV or high bitrate MP3 holds up better than a low quality copy, since shifting makes noise and compression artifacts more obvious.

  6. 06

    Preview the busiest part

Play the loudest, densest section in the preview. If the chorus holds up after the shift, the quieter parts usually will too.

FAQ

Pitch changer FAQ

Quick answers about semitones, tempo, sound quality and privacy.

How do I change the pitch of a song online?+

Open the file in the tool above, move the pitch slider up or down in semitones, press Render preview and play the result. When it sounds right, download it as a WAV file. The song keeps its original tempo unless you also move the tempo slider.

How do I change the key of a song?+

Find the current key with the key finder, count the semitones to the key you want, then move the pitch slider by that many. Each semitone is one key step: C to D is 2, C to F is 5, and 12 make a full octave. The tempo stays put, so it works as an audio key changer.

How do I lower the key of a song for my voice?+

For a lower key, try the pitch slider at -1, -2 and -3 and sing the highest line each time. Pick the smallest shift where that line feels easy. A drop of 1 to 3 semitones is often enough, and smaller shifts also sound the most natural.

Can I change the BPM of a song without changing pitch?+

Yes. The tempo slider runs from 0.5x to 2x and leaves the key alone, so it works as a BPM changer. Multiply the original BPM by the factor: a 100 BPM song at 1.2x plays at 120 BPM. Use the BPM finder first if you do not know the original tempo.

Why does audio sound strange after a big pitch shift?+

Pitch shifting stretches and re-spaces the sound wave. Beyond about 5 semitones the side effects become audible: a metallic edge, smeared drums, and voices that sound thin when raised or boomy when lowered. Every pitch shifter does this, so save big shifts for effects.

Can I use it as a voice pitch modifier?+

Yes. Open a voice recording and raise it a few semitones for a lighter tone, or lower it for a deeper one. A plain pitch shift moves the whole voice, resonance included, so large shifts sound like a cartoon or monster effect rather than a different person.

Which formats can this MP3 pitch changer open?+

It opens any format your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, M4A or AAC, OGG and, in most browsers, FLAC. The result downloads as an uncompressed WAV file. For long recordings it works on the first 10 minutes. To change the pitch of a video, extract its audio first.

Is this pitch changer free, and does it use AI?+

It is free and needs no sign-up. It does not use AI: pitch and tempo changes are made with established signal-processing methods that run inside your browser, and your file is never uploaded to a server.
