About this pronunciation guide

How to read the IPA, how US and UK differ, and how to get AI voiceover to say a word right.

What is the difference between IPA and the respelling?+

IPA is the International Phonetic Alphabet: one symbol per sound, precise and dictionary standard. The respelling spells the sound with ordinary letters and puts the stressed syllable in capitals, so you can say it without learning IPA. Use them together.

How different are US and UK pronunciations?+

For most words the difference is small and lies in the vowels and the r sound, which British English often drops. A few words also move the stress. Every entry lists both readings and explains how they differ.

Why are brand names so often mispronounced?+

Many brand names come from other languages or are invented words, so spelling and sound do not line up and people guess from the letters. Each entry gives the official or native reading and explains where the usual mistakes come from.

How do I get an AI voice to say a word correctly?+

Check the right reading with the respelling here, then generate a preview. If the AI still gets it wrong, type the respelling in place of the word, or add punctuation around it so the model slows down. Try a few takes and keep the most natural one.
