Best Voice Changer 2026: Voicemod and 7 Alternatives Compared
On this page

Looking for the best voice changer for Discord, streaming or gaming? The answer depends on three things: which device you use, whether you want classic effects or AI voices, and how much setup you'll put up with. We compared eight options across Windows, Mac, mobile, the browser and open source. Below you'll find a comparison table, a short review of each tool, Voicemod alternatives by need, Discord and OBS setup steps, latency fixes and the safety rules that come with disguising your voice.

Best voice changer comparison table

"Real-time" means the tool changes your live microphone signal while you talk. "AI voices" means voice models that rebuild your voice, as opposed to effects such as pitch shift, robot or echo.

The best voice changer options, reviewed

Voicemod: the most complete all-rounder

Voicemod installs a virtual microphone. You pick "Voicemod Virtual Microphone" as the input device in Discord, a game or OBS, and every app listening to that input hears the changed voice. Its site lists 200+ in-house voices plus a large community library, a soundboard, keybinds and Voicelab for building your own effect chains.

According to Voicemod's help center, the free version gives you a limited daily rotation of voices and one soundboard, while PRO unlocks the full library, unlimited soundboards and Voicelab. The desktop app runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and on macOS (its system requirements article asks for Ventura 13 or later), and AI voices need a CPU with AVX2 support.

Two details are easy to miss. Voicemod says its AI voices were built with English-speaking professional actors, so speaking English gives the best results. And the mobile app is not a full live changer on its own: it records voice messages of up to 10 seconds with filters, while live voice changing on phones and consoles needs the VMKey hardware. ChromeOS and Linux are on its roadmap, not available.

Voice.ai: free AI voices if your GPU can keep up

Voice.ai advertises a free real-time AI voice changer with thousands of free voices, plus a recording mode for changing short clips. Its help center lists the desktop app for Windows and an iOS app that it says works differently from the PC version. The minimum to run is Windows 8 and 4 GB of RAM, but Live Mode depends on the graphics card: the tested cards it lists include the NVIDIA GTX 980 and RTX 3050 and the AMD RX 580. On a laptop with integrated graphics, test before you rely on it.

Clownfish Voice Changer: light, free and system-wide

Clownfish installs at system level on Windows, so every app that uses your microphone is affected. The current v2.05 download targets Windows 10 and 11. Effects include Alien, Robot, Radio, male and female pitch and a custom pitch setting. It can host VST plugins, and since version 1.90 it can pass your voice through VC Client for AI voices. The license on its site grants use free of charge. The same developer publishes a Chrome extension and a terminal edition for macOS and Linux that needs a separate virtual audio cable.

MorphVOX: paid, with a proper trial

Screaming Bee sells MorphVOX Pro for Windows and MorphVOX Mac. Its pages describe voice-learning algorithms, background noise cancellation, sound effects and background ambiences rather than AI voice models. The software is fully functional for a 7-day trial, after which it's a one-time purchase with no subscription. It suits people who want classic character voices without a monthly plan.

Graillon 3 Free with OBS or Voicemeeter: the DIY route

Auburn Sounds calls Graillon a live voice changer. It's an audio plugin with pitch shifting, formant shifting and pitch correction, and the Free Edition is fully usable. It ships as VST2, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP for Windows, macOS and Linux. A plugin needs a host: OBS Studio has a built-in VST 2.x filter, so a streamer can add Graillon to the mic source and change the voice on stream only. On Windows, Clownfish can host the plugin system-wide, and VB-Audio's Voicemeeter, a donationware virtual mixer, handles routing when one processed mic has to reach several apps.

Open-source AI: RVC real-time GUI and VCClient

The RVC WebUI project (MIT license) ships a separate real-time GUI. Its README reports about 170 ms end-to-end latency, or about 90 ms with ASIO devices, depending on driver support. You need a trained voice model, a Python setup and ideally an NVIDIA GPU; our RVC voice model guide walks through it.

VCClient by w-okada is a real-time client for RVC and Beatrice v2 models, with Windows builds (CPU, DirectML or CUDA) and an Apple Silicon Mac build. It can also run the conversion on a second PC so your gaming machine stays free. Neither tool is plug-and-play, and both should only be used with models of speakers who agreed to it.

Voice changer extensions for Chrome

A voice changer extension changes the microphone signal that web pages in Chrome receive, such as web Discord or Google Meet. It can't touch desktop apps or games. Clownfish Voice Changer for Chrome is the best known; when we checked, its listing showed version 0.3, last updated in December 2023, with a 2.9-star rating. Our voice changer Chrome extension guide covers the options and the Chromebook limits.

Voicemod alternatives: free and paid picks by need

People searching for a free Voicemod alternative usually want one of these:

  • Free and simple on Windows: Clownfish. No account, light on resources, classic effects.
  • Free AI voices: Voice.ai, if your graphics card matches its Live Mode list.
  • Open source and local: RVC real-time GUI or VCClient, with consenting voice models.
  • No subscription: MorphVOX, a single purchase after the trial.
  • Stream only: Graillon 3 Free inside OBS.
  • Chromebook or a locked-down PC: a Chrome extension, limited to web apps.

How to choose the best voice transformer for you

Answer these before you download anything:

  1. Where must the new voice be heard? One app (OBS) works with a plugin. Every app needs a virtual microphone (Voicemod, Clownfish, MorphVOX, Voice.ai). Web apps only can work with an extension.
  2. Effects or AI voices? Effects such as pitch, robot and radio are light on hardware and add little delay. AI voices sound more like a different person but need a modern CPU or GPU and add latency.
  3. What hardware do you have? Check AVX2 support for Voicemod's AI voices and the GPU list for Voice.ai's Live Mode.
  4. Which language will you speak? AI voices trained on English speech may be less convincing in other languages, as Voicemod notes about its own.
  5. Accounts and connection. Voicemod needs a login and a connection to its servers. Voicemeeter's site says it needs no internet connection and collects no user data. Choose what fits your privacy expectations.

Setup tips: Discord, OBS routing and latency

The pattern is the same for every virtual-microphone tool:

  1. In the voice changer, select your real microphone as the input and your headphones as the output.
  2. Discord: open User Settings, then Voice & Video. Set the Input Device to the changer's virtual microphone and the Output Device to your headphones. Voicemod's Discord guide also recommends the Studio input profile, so Discord's Krisp and noise suppression don't process the changed voice a second time.
  3. OBS: open the properties of your Mic/Aux source and select the virtual microphone, or add a VST 2.x filter for a plugin such as Graillon.
  4. Hearing yourself twice in OBS? That happens when "hear myself" monitoring is on and OBS also captures desktop audio. Turn monitoring off while streaming, or capture applications separately.
  5. Cut latency: use a wired headset (Voicemod's requirements note that Bluetooth causes more compatibility problems), close heavy background apps, prefer effects over AI voices on weak hardware, and use ASIO drivers where the tool supports them, as RVC's figures show.
  6. Test before going live: record a short clip in OBS or Discord's mic test and listen back on headphones.

When you don't need a real-time voice changer

If the voice is for a YouTube video, a TikTok, a meme or a voiceover, you don't need live processing. Record a clean take, then change it afterwards, where you can retry as often as you like and nobody hears the misses.

Our pitch changer shifts a recording up or down by up to 12 semitones without changing its speed, or changes the tempo from 0.5x to 2x. It runs in your browser, the file is never uploaded, and you download a WAV. Expect artifacts beyond about five semitones, as with any pitch shifter.

Changing a recording, not a live call?

Shift a voice clip up to 12 semitones in your browser. Nothing to install, nothing uploaded, download as WAV.

For scripted content you can skip your own voice entirely. Preset AI voices such as the robot voice read a script for you, and voice design builds a new voice from a written description. The samples are free to play; generating speech uses credits once you sign in.

Safety, etiquette and platform rules

  • Install only from official sources. Use the developer's own site or an official store such as Google Play, the App Store or the Chrome Web Store. Skip cracked "free Pro" downloads; you can't know what else they install.
  • Mind the audio driver. Desktop changers add a virtual audio device. If sound misbehaves after uninstalling, Clownfish's FAQ suggests reinstalling your audio driver.
  • Check extension permissions. A voice changer extension needs your microphone. Look at the publisher, the last update and the site access it asks for, and remove it when you're done.
  • Don't deceive or harass. Discord's Community Guidelines ban harassment and misrepresenting your identity in a deceptive or harmful way, including impersonating people. Catfishing, pranking strangers or scam calls with a disguised voice can also break the law.
  • Respect voice rights. Use AI voice models only of people who agreed to it, and never to pass yourself off as a real person.
  • Follow each platform's rules, and tell your audience when a stream uses a character voice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best voice changer for PC?+

It depends on what you need. Voicemod is the most complete option for Windows and Mac, with a free version and AI voices. Clownfish is the lightest free choice on Windows, Voice.ai offers free AI voices if your graphics card meets its Live Mode requirements, and MorphVOX suits people who prefer a one-time purchase over a subscription.

What is the best free voice changer?+

For classic effects on Windows, Clownfish Voice Changer is free and works system-wide. Voicemod's free version gives you a limited daily rotation of voices. For free AI voices, Voice.ai or the open-source RVC real-time GUI and VCClient work, but they need stronger hardware and more setup.

Is there a free Voicemod alternative?+

Yes. Clownfish Voice Changer (Windows) is free, Voice.ai is free with AI voices, Graillon 3 Free works as a plugin inside OBS, and RVC and VCClient are open source. None of them copies every Voicemod feature, so pick by the feature you care about most.

What is the best AI voice changer?+

Among easy installs, Voicemod and Voice.ai both offer real-time AI voices. Voicemod's AI voices need an AVX2-capable CPU and Voice.ai's Live Mode needs a capable GPU. For full control, RVC and VCClient run voice models on your own computer, but you need a model of a voice you have permission to use.

Does a voice changer extension work in Discord?+

Only in Discord's web version running in Chrome. An extension changes the microphone signal that web pages receive, so the Discord desktop app, games and other programs are not affected. For those you need a desktop voice changer with a virtual microphone.

Is it legal to use a voice changer?+

A voice changer is an ordinary audio tool. What can be illegal is how it is used: deceiving people for money, harassment, impersonating someone or fraud. Platforms add their own rules; Discord, for example, bans deceptive impersonation. Rules vary by country, and this is not legal advice.
